What do you like most about your major?

I like that I am constantly being challenged to develop my own teaching style, while being encouraged to be unique and creative with my teaching and my learning. The diverse atmosphere in the College of Fine and Applied Arts allows students, faculty and professional staff to work hand-in-hand. In this College, the students’ expectations and desires help to shape classes as much as the latest research.

What are your favorite courses within your major?

Music 338: Contemporary Trends in Music Education and Music 245: Music for Early Childhood Teachers introduced me to contemporary research ideas in music education. Dr. Gregory DeNardo challenged us to use this knowledge in ways that will help us understand our evolving role as music educators.

Describe your most memorable experience at Illinois.

It has to be when I attended my first Illinois football game in the fall of 2001. I sat in Block I, danced to the Marching Illini, and sang the Alma Mater with 2000+ students, alumni, and fans. At that moment, I really understood what it meant to be an Illini.

Why do you belong at Illinois?

Music is a creative art and at the University of Illinois, the teaching of music is a creative and personal experience. Only the University of Illinois can offer so many great ways to succeed as a student, professional and human being.
