Transfer Admission Requirements

Admission of transfer applicants is based on a combination of the hours and content of transferable credit and the transfer GPA (sophomore transfer or junior transfer). The minimum transfer GPA is 2.25 (A=4.0). However, most curricula require a higher GPA.

Most transfer programs also require the completion of prerequisite coursework prior to enrollment. The Transfer Handbook lists all such requirements by programs of study. Detailed transfer course information is available on this site to help you determine the transferability of any coursework.

If the number of qualified applicants to a college or curriculum exceeds the admissions quota, those best qualified will be admitted, and preference may be given to Illinois residents. Lower-division transfer applicants (students with less than 60 transferable semester hours) may be restricted when space is limited.

Applicants are also required to answer two essay questions on the application:

  • Essay 1: Tell us more about yourself by providing information not addressed elsewhere on this application. In an essay of about 300 words, describe your passions and special interests. In your opinion, what makes you unique?
  • Essay 2: In an essay of about 300 words, tell us more about your professional and intellectual aspirations and prior personal experiences relevant to your choice of a specific college or academic program at the University of Illinois.

We consider international students to be any student who does not have American citizenship or permanent residency status. Whether applying as a freshman or transfer student, all international students must complete the requirements found within the international student section of this website.

Note: domestic students with coursework outside the U.S. should also view the additional international requirements.
